The underlying premise of Mountcastle’s Verbal Math Lessons is to emulate the way math is taught in countries that prize math mastery very highly and to learn from their techniques.

Math-heavy countries like India and Russia use mental math, which is the same as verbal math, in teaching elementary math facts, rather than putting endless math worksheets in front of a child. They also teach mathematical tricks to enhance calculation skills and they make math come alive and of interest to the young student.

Math is a cumulative discipline, with the elementary math facts being the foundation for advanced, complicated math functions and discoveries. If one’s foundation is weak, all future math endeavors will be a struggle and virtually joyless.

The Verbal Math Lessons are presented with suggested games and brain studies have shown that when information is taught in the setting of a game, it takes far fewer repetitions to make a pattern on the brain — and one  that is permanent.

The Verbal Math Primary Lessons are offered in Grade 1, 19 pgs; Grades 2-3, 22 pgs; Grades 3-4, 17 pgs and Advanced Lessons — Fractions, 26 pgs/Percents, 23 pgs; and Algebra, 15 pgs. Mountcastle advises that if a student completes the Advanced Lessons, s/he will have no difficulty with any college entrance exam, including the PSAT, SAT, ACT, etc.
